Princess Factory, a spa for kids, opens in New Milford

NEW MILFORD — Princess Factory is not your typical spa or nail salon.

The new business at 132 Danbury Road in New Milford caters to girls aged 3 to 15 and offers services such as manicures, pedicures, glitter tattoos, hair tinsel and makeup application. Princess Factory is also available for birthday parties and mother-daughter, or “queen and princess” visits.

“In this age of technology, our girls need to find a fantasy space that not only evokes fun, but a different type of entertainment from what they find in everyday life,” said Patricia Munoz, who opened Princess Factory with her husband, Carlos. “Our staff organizes activities and parties based on having a great time, while at the same time encouraging a positive image of well-being and personal care.”

Kids spas are a growing trend nationally. Relatively new to Connecticut, they are more prevalent in areas such as Florida and New York City.

New Milford resident Justina Mann was part of a group of four adults and six girls, ages 4 through 7, who visited Princess Factory recently. The young girls received the full treatment with bath bombs, fashion show and makeup.

“The kids loved it. There were two women working there and nobody ever felt as if they were waiting too long,” Mann said. “I didn’t know at the time, but they will also do just manicures and pedicures. I’d grab my daughter and head down for that.”

Girls have plenty of options when it comes to colors, scents and tastes at Princess Factory. Girls start their service by soaking their hands in a bowl of water with a bath bomb added. Bath bombs, which fizz when placed in water, come in scents such as jasmine, roses lamboree, and oatmeal cookie dough.

Princess Factory has more than 100 colors of nail polish and just as many “hair flair” options. Girls can also make their own lip gloss and lotions. The nontoxic glitter tattoos last about a week and girls have an entire book’s worth of options. The tattoo station, Carlos said, is also good for keeping boys occupied when they are part of a princess party.

The large birthday room includes an arts-and-crafts table and station for decorating cupcakes. A small retail section includes products such as beads, jewelry holders, dolls and tiaras.

“They’ve got a niche market. There’s no shortage of nail salons in the area, but this is something different,” Kevin Bielmeier, economic development director for New Milford, said. “They are offering an experience that’s unique and those types of businesses generally have a better chance of succeeding. I like creative ideas. It’s nice to see a different spin on things.”

Patricia Munoz came up with the name Princess Factory with her 6-year-old daughter. The Munozes, who are Brookfield residents, designed the space and created the logo on their own.
