‘Anastasia,’ ‘Hairspray’ top Broadway Series coming to Shubert in 2021

New Haven’s Shubert Theatre is looking ahead, as difficult as that might be during an incredibly uncertain time.

The birthplace of the nation’s greatest hits, as it is called, announced a 2020-2021 lineup recently for its Broadway Series of shows. But because of the national crisis over COVID-19 and uncertainty for the fall, the four Broadway shows are slated after the new year arrives.

John Fisher, outgoing executive director of the Shubert , said of the 106th anniversary season, “All of us at the Shubert miss seeing our patrons, and we are sure they miss gathering with family and friends for the experience of live performances in our wonderful theater. The arts have a way of inspiring us and lifting our spirits - and we will continue that tradition at the Shubert during the 2020-2021 season.”

For the touring shows, that mean 2021. The College Street theater where “My Fair Lady” famously premiered will present “Fiddler on the Roof” Feb. 26-26, “Anastasia” April 30-May 2, “Waitress” June 4-6 (it had been scheduled last month but was postponed; tickets will be honored for the new dates) and a new version of “Hairspray” June 25-27.

The announcement was made recently during a sold-out online event with entertainers, officials and patrons taking part.

Theater official Anthony Lupinacci said you can buy a subscription package now but individual shows will go on sale later this year. “During this intermission, as we call it, we wanted to give people something to look forward to,” he said, noting that the Shubert will have other music, comedy and family shows this fall that don’t come under the touring Broadway Series banner.
