Connecticut Theater Dance Company stages 2 Westport performances

Connecticut Theater Dance Company is introducing two new works: “Bella & the Magic Teapot,” an original ballet taking audiences on a journey around the world, and “Mélange 2019,” a cabaret-style evening show featuring nine new contemporary works, including “PAWS for Dance,” which raises awareness about animal cruelty, adoptions and the need to care for pets.

The contemporary ballet company’s performances — featuring a cast of more than 40 amateur and professional dancers from throughout Fairfield County — are taking place at Westport’s Saugatuck Elementary School Theater, 170 Riverside Ave., with “Bella & the Magic Teapot” at 1 p.m. and “Mélange 2019” at 6:30. Tickets start at $25/$15. Click here for tickets and more information or call 203-293-4355.

Inspired by the bedtime stories CTD Director Michelle Sperry told her four children, CTD’s newest ballet, “Bella & the Magic Teapot,” combines classical ballet technique and pantomime with contemporary dance. The piece features CTD dancers ages 4 to 18, cameo roles from CTD faculty and guest appearances by professionals from CT Theater Dance Company. The dancers utilize their classical training (which for some is only a year) and then put creative and unusual movements within classical technique.

“I am looking forward to seeing the children and their families enjoy this colorful, classical ballet that has a beautiful storyline with energy and youthful fun,” Sperry, in her third season as CTD director, said in news release.
