Brookfield VFW to honor local Navy SEAL killed in Iraq

BROOKFIELD — A Brookfield native killed in combat in Iraq will be recognized Saturday at the veterans’ headquarters named in his honor.

The Brookfield Veterans of Foreign Wars will hold a ceremony at 11 a.m. to remember Jason D. Lewis, a Navy SEAL killed in 2007 during a combat mission in Baghdad.

The organization was recently re-designated as the Jason D. Lewis Memorial Brookfield VFW Post 10201.

More than 100 guests, including Lewis’ family, VFW dignitaries, and local, state and national officials, are expected to attend. A Navy SEAL who served with Lewis during his tour in Iraq also plans to attend, according to a press release.

During the ceremony, the veterans will retire their old flag and raise their new one bearing Lewis’ name. A bronze plaque mounted on a stone monument will be unveiled to honor Lewis, while a shadow box containing his image, as well as awards and decorations provided by his wife, will be on display.

The event is at the VFW’s facility at 202 Candlewood Road and is invitation only.
