New Milford employees and appointed officials will all now sign an acknowledgment that they have read, understand and will comply with the town’s ethics policy.
The requirement doesn’t extend to elected officials due to state law. However they are able to read the acknowledgment and are encouraged to sign it, according to a press release from Mayor Pete Bass.
Bass said the changes were to keep with the Town Charter and show officials’ commitment to upholding the ethics code. He said it had nothing to do with last year’s allegations that council members had violated the ethic’s code.
“Ethics and procedure is at the forefront of my administration and how we will conduct ourselves,” Bass said in a statement. “We have increased visibility and access to our ethics policy by placing it prominently on newmilford.org.”
The policy is posted under the government tab on the navigation bar on the left of the website’s homepage. There is also a new landing page with links.
Bass said town officials will also be updating the ethics policy soon.
