Elsa Diaz of Independence Golf Club enters the final round of the Connecticut Women’s Open in the lead after shooting a 6-under-par 66 in Tuesday’s opening round at Innis Arden Golf Club in Greenwich.
Diaz finished her first round with eight birdies, four each on the front and back nine. Danielle Bambola, an amateur (Nysga E-club) is one shot off the pace heading into the final round at 5-under-par 67.
Sarah Burnham of Rush Creek Golf Club shot a 3-under 69 in the first round and Mia Barchetti of Hannastown Golf Club is four shots back at 2-under 70.
Greenwich High School graduate Catherine McEvoy of Innis Arden is five strokes behind going into Wednesday’s final round. McEvoy carded a 1-under 71 on Tuesday. McEvoy, an amateur, who plays on the women’s golf team at Michigan State University, had recorded two birdies and parred 14 holes during her consistent opening round.
Kyra Cox of Centennial Golf Club is tied with McEvoy for fifth place, as she also shot a 71. The second and final round of the tournament takes place Wednesday at Innis Arden with the two lead groups teeing off at 9:50 and 10 a.m.
