The New Milford High School gymnastics team is preparing for the upcoming season and will have to overcome some key losses but has a combination of returners and new talent that should allow them to compete at a high level once again.
The Green Wave finished fourth in the highly competitive SWC last season and were fifth at the CIAC State Championships.
“The team is shaping up nicely this season,” Coach Bethany Mihaly said. “We had a large group of talented freshman join us this year so even with the tough losses of our graduates, we look to be in good shape.”
Gone from last season’s squad are Mikayla Dumas (All State and CT National Team), captain Aly Svinte, Sheah Tooley, Caitlyn Chemero and Olivia Thalassinos.
The Green Wave captains this year are Ashley Jennings and Anna Santerelli, and Mihaly expects that duo to be among the team’s main scorers this season.
Other key competitors for the team will be seniors Bri Hatzmann, Mya Barrett and Morgan Donnelly along with junior Jillian Melendez, sophomore Thea Spinner and freshmen Emmaline Moore and Sarah Beck.
The team will also be looking for new things from seniors Abby Hunniford, Mariana Miranda, new to the team junior Gillian Corgan, and sophomores Rachel Kirby, Jillian Langworthy and Grace Zona.
The season opens on Jan. 5 with the Pomperaug Invitational. The Green Wave host their first home meet of the season on Jan. 8 when they take on Joel Barlow, Newtown and Oxford.
As they are working on skills and routines for the upcoming season, the team will also be looking for a little help from the community. The Green Wave gymnastics team will be doing a fundraiser at All Aboard on Tuesday.
“The fundraiser is for leotards and sweats,” Mihaly said. “It’s very important to the program. The girls have to purchase their own team gear every year.”
