WASHINGTON — Almost every element of the home at 46 Senff Road was built with its surrounding 70-acre landscape in mind — even the 50-seat amphitheater and Greek-like temple set on a hill in its yard.
The “architectural folly” is the most surprising of the property’s half a dozen buildings, the home’s listing agent, Kathryn Clair, said. It sits a short walk or drive away from the main four-bedroom house on top of the largest of the property’s “gentle hills.”
“It is modeled after a Greek temple with Doric columns,” Clair said. “It is clearly to obtain the view — and it’s spectacular.”
New-Haven based Gray Organschi Architecture took a similar approach when constructing the rest of the buildings on the property, Clair said, ensuring each fits with the 70-acre landscape.
Instead of leveling out the land where the modern-style main house was built, for example, the firm designed it so that it would fit into the hillside and overlook the spring-fed pond.
“(They) used the landscape as a guide to set the tone for the house,” Clair said. “It was designed so that from every room there’s a view.”
Materials both inside and on the exterior of the house — including granite, limestone, Alaskan cedar and sandstone floors — were chosen to blend with the landscape outside, she said.
Other buildings on the property include a two-bedroom guest house, greenhouse, caretaker complex, storage building and a “tennis house” overlooking a lighted court.
The property also includes a 5-acre pond, trails, meadows of indigenous plants and perennial gardens.
The tennis house has grass and wildflowers on its roof so that it matches the landscape. “It sits beautifully in with the land,” Clair said.
Inside the main house, a living room with high ceilings is found at the center of the home and between two wings, one for guests and the other with a master bedroom, family room, kitchen and dining room.
The lower level includes an indoor pool with floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking the pond, a game room, sauna, exercise room and squash court. The house is on the market for $14.9 million.
“It’s unlike anything in this area,” Clair said. “It is very special without being over the top. It is definitely one of the most amazing properties in Litchfield County.”
