On the Market / Nearly 200-year-old colonial for sale in Wilton

WILTON — The Leary-Slaughter House, also known as the Enoch Gilbert-Farley House, is only a few years away from its 200th anniversary, having been built circa 1825, and yet the house at 651 Nod Hill Road is perfectly suitable for contemporary times.

“The house is well preserved,” according to a 1989 report prepared by architectural historian Mary McCahon. The report, part of the Historic Resources Inventory of buildings and structures on file with the Wilton Historical Society, further says that despite the age of the “charming, well detailed Colonial house is more an expression of the 20th rather than the 18th century ... it was completely reworked in the Colonial Revival style after 1942 (for Mrs. George Leary/Eugenia Slaughter) ... Architect Nelson Breed (of Wilton), noted for his academically correct and superbly proportioned and detailed dwellings, restyled the house.”

During the remodeling project, a large rear ell was removed and a new gabled wing was added on the north side of the house. Breed installed 12-over-12 double-hung windows and a massive interior chimney stack. She describes the house as a “quaint, charming, three-bay, two-story, central chimney dwelling.” Breed created from this white antique clapboard colonial with black shutters a timeless treasure. “It makes an exceptional permanent home or a weekend retreat,” the co-listing agents said.

McCahon goes on the say that “Breed’s work on the house was well documented in a House and Garden article preserved in the historical society’s archives,” and that his wife, Vera Breed, a noted landscape architect, landscaped the grounds of this attractive 2.14-acre level and sloping property.

The 2,600-square-foot house is set into a hill on the west side of Nod Hill, which is a designated scenic road. This property is rather scenic itself with a pond and pergola, and a barn that doubles as a two-car garage.
